Information about Updated Solar Installation Plans
Members of the Carlsbad Unified School District community are invited to attend the following public meetings for Phase 1 Projects in the 2018 Facilities Master Plan:
Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at 6:00 pm: Community Information and Feedback Session
Location: the District Office (in the Boardroom) – 6225 El Camino Real, Carlsbad 92009
•Community presentation on the updated scope of work for District-wide Solar Energy, Battery Storage, and Sustainability projects.
The purpose of this meeting will be to provide information to the community (including parents and staff) about the updated scope of work for our Phase 1 Solar Energy projects. District staff will also gather community feedback which will then be provided to the Board of Trustees as they consider final approval of the updated designs. The updated final designs will be discussed by the Board of Trustees at the following meeting:

•Board review and approval of updated District-wide Solar Energy, Battery
Storage, and Sustainability projects.
Highlights of the updated proposal:
•The original Phase 1 plan included installation of solar and battery storage solutions at all 12 of our campuses, with an anticipated generation of 1,190 kilowatts of energy. The established budget for Phase 1 is $6.5 million.
•After evaluation of the infrastructure work required to connect solar and batteries to the grid, our energy consultant has determined that extensive trenching and infrastructure will be required, which may drive up the cost by nearly 50%, to about $9 million.
•To stay on budget, we’ve developed an alternative plan, which will consolidate solar installations at eight school sites – our joint campuses (Aviara Oaks, Calavera Hills) and our larger secondary campuses (Valley Middle, Carlsbad High and Sage Creek High), as well as Buena Vista Elementary (where the point of connection is ideally located).
•By doing so, we’ll generate slightly more energy (1,192 kilowatts compared to 1,190), while remaining within our project budget.
