Following new water and wastewater rates approved this week, Carlsbad residents will continue to have some of the lowest bills in the region.
The Carlsbad Municipal Water District provides water, recycled water and wastewater services to over 80% of the city. Members of the Carlsbad City Council also serve as the board of directors for the water district.
The City Council heard the results of a “cost of service” study that looked at the current actual cost to provide water, wastewater and recycled water services to customers. Based on the study, City Council adopted a 1% increase to water revenue Jan. 1,2020 and another 2% Jan. 1, 2021. The Carlsbad Municipal Water District has not increased its water rates for the past two years. Recycled water rates will remain the same.
Water rates will remain 20% lower than the average rates for the rest of the San Diego region. One gallon of water will cost the average residential customer less than a penny per gallon.
Wastewater revenue, which has not increased for the past four years, will increase by 3% Jan. 1, 2020 and another 3% Jan. 1, 2021 for the average household.
The water district and city notified customers by mail of the proposed rate increases prior to Tuesday’s public hearing.
