On April 18, at approximately 1552 hours, Northbound Amtrak A583 struck a pedestrian in the grade crossing intersection of Wisconsin Avenue, in the city of Oceanside. The pedestrian was standing in the middle of the intersection even though the grade crossing warning devices were activated. As the train approached the intersection, the engineer observed the pedestrian in the middle of the intersection. The engineer sounded his horn multiple times warning the pedestrian of the oncoming train. The pedestrian made no attempt to walk away from the tracks. The engineer activated the train’s emergency braking system but the train was unable to stop before striking the pedestrian. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.
