OCEANSIDE — After more than two years, the city’s aggressive and innovative Coastal Resilience Competition is nearing the end.
The three firms — Scape, International Coastal Management and Deltares and MVRDV — presented their final proposals on Wednesday at the Junior Seau Beach Community Center on The Strand. On Thursday, those proposals went before a 10-person jury, which then selected one of the firms, according to Oceanside Coastal Zone Administrator Jayme Timberlake and juror Bob Ashton of Save Oceanside Sand.
The winning recommendation has not been disclosed as the City Council will vote on the final winner during its Jan. 31 workshop.
Representatives from each firm gave their final presentation to about 200 people plus city officials regarding the RE:BEACH Oceanside Coastal Resilience Competition. The goal is to nourish and replenish the city’s southern coastline through a unique competition process.
Each firm said their pilot concepts can be replicated down the coastline with most focusing on beaches at Tyson Street, Oceanside Boulevard, Buccaneer Beach and Wisconsin Street.
“We started this whole journey five years ago this April,” said juror Bob Ashton, who is also president of SOS. “It’s been a remarkable journey with a lot of milestones and a few setbacks, but that’s inevitable. Nothing great comes without a little bit of work. I think the city has responded extremely well in putting up its own money and doing a study and hiring Jayme as the Coastal Zone Administrator.”
