The holiday season is upon us; while it is a time of joy and celebration, it can be a time of year when stress increases. For some, stress can lead to physical illness, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. I want you to know that you are not alone. No matter what you are going through, please know that there is hope and help is available.

You have heard of CPR which revives the heart, now I want to introduce you to QPR. Question, Persuade, Refer. QPR is a way to help revive hope. If you think someone you know is having a tough time and may be suicidal, don’t just wonder about it. Start the conversation and ask questions. How you start the conversation is less important than the fact that you are reaching out and acknowledging you have concerns for their well-being. The first step on a path to hope can be acknowledging someone is struggling. Give them your full attention. Let them know you are listening and care. Next, work to persuade. Stay with them and reach out for assistance from professionals. Lastly, refer and help them get in contact with resources. No matter what time of day, help is available. You can contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 9-8-8. In an emergency, please always dial 9-1-1. You can also contact the Oceanside Police Department at 760-435-4900 at any time and we can put you in touch with resources. When caring people intervene, lives can be saved.

Make sure to follow the Oceanside Police Department on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for additional resources, safety tips, and upcoming department events. I also want to remind you that there are a variety of career opportunities available at the Oceanside Police Department from police officer positions to professional staff careers. If you are willing to work hard, be nice, and help change lives, we have a place for you at OPD. Visit joinopd.net to learn more about current job openings.

Thank you and be safe.
