Oceanside Unified, in partnership with Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE), recently hosted a successful Family Math Together Program at Libby Elementary that empowered families to support their elementary students with math. Through engaging lessons, parents and guardians learned strategies and resources to help overcome math anxiety, foster a growth mindset, and strengthen understanding of core math concepts, including Common Core Standards, the 8 Mathematical Practices, and the California Math Framework.
The program created an encouraging environment where families could learn alongside each other, building confidence in their ability to support student success. Parents shared personal experiences with math and explored ways to shift the conversation at home to one that celebrates effort, persistence, and problem-solving over simply finding the “right answer.”
Interactive activities gave families practical tools they could use immediately, from math games that reinforce number sense to hands-on strategies that make abstract concepts more accessible. These activities not only supported student learning but also strengthened family bonds through collaborative problem-solving.
By the end of the program, families expressed greater confidence in helping their children with homework and guiding them through challenges. Many participants highlighted that the biggest takeaway was learning how to model a positive attitude toward math, demonstrating to their children that everyone can be a “math person.”
Oceanside Unified and PIQE look forward to continuing this partnership, ensuring that more families across the district have access to resources that empower them to actively participate in their child’s academic journey. Together, they are building a strong foundation for student achievement and lifelong success.
