Palomar Performing Arts will present Defying Gravity by Jane Anderson running May 5 – 14, 2023 in the Studio Theatre located on the campus of Palomar College on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 2:30 p.m
Defying Gravity is a beautifully impressionistic work, loosely based on the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster, which illuminates the hopes and dreams that fuel us to reach for the inner and outer limits of human possibility. It is an inspirational story of resilience that carries us to that mysterious region on the other side of grief, where loss grows wings and flies us toward the light.
This production of Defying Gravity will be directed by Michael Mufson. Director Michael Mufson said, “Since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve been looking for theatre experiences that help me understand how to process collective tragedy and face a world that seems on the edge of implosion. Defying Gravity counters the heaviness of grief with the buoyancy of human imagination, aspiration, and compassion.” He went on to say, “All the characters in the play are on some kind of adventure to transcend the grief and regret that holds them down. Ultimately they teach us how to face our fears and to experience that true joy forgiveness and in embracing the mystery and beauty of human complexity.”
