Parents Should Decide

Yesterday, I made a motion to take a stand against the requirement for kids to wear masks while indoor at public schools. I proposed having parents decide whether or not to have their children wear masks. Kids have proven to be resilient, and don’t experience the same impacts of the virus as vulnerable adults and seniors.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get enough support from my fellow Board members. However, I will keep fighting for our kids and common sense. I believe in the same way we’ve cared for the most vulnerable, let’s also prioritize the growth and well-being of our kids, respect the ability of parents to weigh risks, and let parents decide if a mask is best for their child in school.

People often ask me, “What can we do?” One of the most impactful ways you can make a change is by speaking out. Every government Board meets, whether it’s over Zoom or in-person. Every meeting is required to allow time for public comment. This is where you can speak out. Whether it’s an issue at the County Board of Supervisors, SANDAG, School Boards, Water Authority, any public entity has meetings and you’re allowed to address your representatives.

Yesterday, Melissa O’Connor took time out of her day, brought her kids, and voiced her opinion. This is how it’s done.
