Preventing Underage Drinking this Memorial Holiday Weekend

Customers at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido are getting something extra with every purchase – a message about preventing underage drinking.

CDFE Youth Leaders from various high schools in the Escondido Unified High School District (EUHSD) designed stickers to go on alcoholic beverages and retail end-caps displays, aimed at reminding adults not to purchase/provide alcohol for minors or to allow underage drinking at parties. CDFE Youth Leaders partnered with MADD, San Diego Affiliate, the Escondido Police, City Council members, and other community partners and alcohol retailers.

The “Sticker Shock” Campaign is a national campaign involving partnering with stores that sell beer, wine and liquor to take home. Now, the concept has expanded to bars and restaurants that deliver and serve food to go, to include safe driving messages. This is the first Sticker Shock event in Escondido since 2013 and we hope to continue with this moment to regularly remind adults to not purchase or provide alcohol for minors around major holiday’s where heavy drinking may be involved.

The stickers include a QR code link to an Instagram page where people can learn more about how alcohol impacts teenager’s health, what parents can do, and the laws regarding underage drinking.

Why: Every year, drunk- and drugged-driving crashes kill more than 10 thousand people nationwide. 1 According to the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the majority of underage drinkers (72%) did not pay for alcohol the last time they drank and the most common source of alcohol (29%) for these youth was an unrelated person aged 21 or older. 2 During major holidays, responsible businesses like the Holiday Wine Cellar are doing their part to keep alcohol out of the hands of minors by not selling or serving alcohol to minors. Research shows that parents have an enormous influence on their children’s behavior. When parents talk to children and teenagers, it can keep them from drinking at an early age. 3
