Rotary Clubs Host Clothing Drive for Homeless Veterans

Local Rotarians Start the New Year by Collecting Clothes for homeless veterans

Escondido, Calif. – The Rotary Clubs of Escondido have teamed-up once again this year to host a clothing drive on January 6, 2018, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. in support of the North County Veterans Stand Down.

Rotarians will be at the Escondido City Hall collecting both used and new clothing that will be given to AMVETS and then made available to the homeless veterans during their stay at the four-day stand down.

“We are hoping that when people make room for their new clothes that Santa brought them, they will consider donating their old ones instead of throwing them away or hiding them someplace so that they are out of sight and out of mind,”

Event Coordinator and Rotarian Bonnie Maloney said.

All used clothing will be excepted; however, jackets, sweatshirts, shoes, towels and plus size clothing are needed most. For new clothing socks and underwear are needed and this year Maloney said they have set a goal of collecting 500 pairs of men’s underwear and socks and 50 pairs of underwear and socks for women.

“Most of us take clean socks and underwear for granted,” Maloney said. “However, that’s not always the case for homeless veterans and by providing something so basic, just might give them a sense a normalcy in their daily life.”

The donated clothes will be brought to Green Oak Ranch in Vista during the stand down for the local homeless veterans to receive and for those wishing to donate but cannot make it that day, they can call AMVETS at 1-877-990-8387 and schedule a pick-up.
