On Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020, San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones delivered her second State of the City Address at California State University San Marcos, 333 S. Twin Oaks Valley Road, San Marcos, in the University Student Union Ballroom as part of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce Business Recognition Luncheon.
The address focused on the San Marcos Spirit of Service, which Jones described as “the secret ingredient that makes our City the perfect place to get a top quality education, buy a home, raise a family and retire comfortably.”
Mayor Jones also issued a civic call to action and shared concrete steps everyone can take to embody the San Marcos Spirit of Service to make San Marcos an even more extraordinary place to call home. This is as simple as picking up trash or joining the new San Marcos Citizens Academy – a free, six-week class to help residents learn about their city government.
“San Marcos is an outstanding place to live, work and play because of each and every one of you,” Jones said. “But it will take a collective effort from all of us to move our City forward and achieve a united vision for the future. That’s why I’m challenging you to channel the San Marcos Spirit of Service and take one intentional step to make our City better every single day.”
Jones, the City’s first female mayor, announced two exciting projects that will further secure San Marcos’ place as a leading North County health care hub, including the construction of a new Kaiser Permanente hospital that will bring more than 500 jobs to the region when it opens in 2023, and will add hundreds of additional jobs during construction. In addition, Jones announced that Scripps Health signed a leased in North City for 14,000 square feet of space to expand Scripps primary care and HealthExpress walk in clinic offerings in the City.
Mayor Jones also provided updates about key City programs and services, including information about the City’s General Plan Update process. and touted the City’s falling crime rates, which are now the lowest in San Marcos history.
