The City of San Marcos was recently recognized as one of the safest college towns in America by SafeWise. After ranking #50 in 2021, San Marcos made an impressive jump to #35 in the 2022 report. As the education hub of North County, we are committed to collaborating with the eight higher education institutions within our city to enhance educational assets and opportunities for our community.
SafeWise analyzed city data on crime and population to determine the top 50 safest college towns. To be considered for the ranking, only cities with over 15,000 residents and an accredited college that offered four-year degrees qualified. For-profit institutions, technical and vocational schools, schools that offer only two-year degrees and those with fewer than 2,000 students enrolled annually were excluded.
The City of San Marcos is proud to boast one of the lowest crime rates in San Diego County, and we are honored to be ranked once again in SafeWise’s Safest College Towns report. Thank you to our community for making San Marcos a premier destination for education and safety.
“Public safety is a top priority in all City operations and programs” said San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones. “We are dedicated to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment so our community can continue to thrive.”
We appreciate California State University San Marcos for partnering with us on campus and community services to support an optimal learning environment.
