On December 16, 2019, at approximately 2:34 pm, deputies from the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian at the signal light control crosswalk intersection of Woodland Parkway and Rock Springs Road, in the city of San Marcos. Witnesses observed two 12 year old male Woodland Parkway Middle School students run westbound into a marked crosswalk against a solid red signal light and red crosswalk signal. At that moment, the 38 year old male driver of a white Nissan was approaching the intersection southbound on Woodland Parkway. The male driver of the Nissan was unable to avoid a collision with first juvenile while the second juvenile narrowly avoided being struck by the vehicle. The male driver immediately pulled the side of the roadway where he remained on scene and was later contacted by responding deputies. Witnesses, concerned citizens and school administrative personnel provided medical treatment to the unconscious and visible injured juvenile awaiting the arrival of emergency personnel.
San Marcos Fire and Paramedic Units responded where the injured juvenile was later transported via life flight to Rady’s Children’s Hospital Trauma Unit. The injured juvenile’s level of injury had not been determined pending observation by the attending trauma unit physicians. The uninjured juvenile was released to the custody of school officials. Both juveniles’ parents have been notified of the incident.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to be a factor in this collision.
The San Diego Sheriff’s San Marcos Station’s Traffic Division is investigating the collision. Anyone who may have witnessed or has information about the collision can contact Deputy David J. Arnold Sr. at 760-510-5200.
