Speaker to Present Recent Findings for Seismic Hazards Along the North County Coast

Oceanside – City of Oceanside Councilmember Jerry Kern will be hosting guest speaker Neil Driscoll, Ph.D., from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography November 30, at the Oceanside City Hall Council Chambers starting at 6 p.m.

Driscoll will be presenting his team’s latest study on the Newport-Inglewood/Rose Canyon Fault and its rupture implications that were published earlier this year in the Journal of Geophysical Research.

“We live in area along the Southern California coast that most people believe is high risk for both earthquakes and tsunamis, and the research results presented by Neil Driscoll will help answer questions that some of us who live here worry about,” Kern said.

The presentation topics will include characterizing the fault’s segmentation for earthquake rupture, the hypothesized Oceanside Blind Thrust vs. segmented strike-slip faults, and tsunami hazards for the Inner California Borderlands.

“Anybody that lives within a few miles of the coast should come and find out about the Newport-Inglewood/Rose Canyon Fault,” Kern said. “Find out about what the chances are of a major earthquake or a tsunami happening along the North County San Diego Coast.”

The event is free and even though registering before-hand is not required, it is encouraged because space is limited. Those wishing to register may do so at: www.Eventbrite.com – keyword “Seismic”

Jerry Kern is a third-term Councilmember for the City of Oceanside and a retired school teacher. He was a founding faculty member of Pacific View Charter School, the first charter school to be established in Oceanside.
