Suspect and Officer Identified in Police Shooting

On 4/21/2021, at 7:01 a.m., the Escondido Police Department Communications Center received a call from a reporting party advising that there was an adult white male subject hitting cars with a “metal pole.” The call resulted in a fatal police shooting on Broadway north of 2nd Ave.

The deceased has been identified as Steven John Olson (DOB 02/16/1962). At the time of the shooting, Mr. Olson was living on the streets of Escondido. The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as Officer Chad Moore. Officer Moore was hired as a police officer in Escondido in 2013. He is currently assigned as a uniformed officer in our Patrol Division. It is anticipated that a critical incident video, which will include Body Worn Camera footage of the incident, will be released later this week.
