CARLSBAD, Calif. – On September 20, at 9:59 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department dispatch received a call from a Fallbrook resident stating that his home had been burglarized. He also reported that 63-year-old David Chappee of Carlsbad was the suspect in the burglary and that he was headed to Chappee’s address in Carlsbad to collect his belongings.
The victim asked the Police Department to conduct a “keep the peace” while he contacted David Chappee.
While officers were in route to the 7200 block of Ponto Drive, the Police Department received a second call from the victim reporting that he had arrived at the Ponto address and an altercation with Chappee resulted in Chappee discharging a firearm. The victim was not injured.
Arriving officers contained the scene and searched for Chappee. The Carlsbad SWAT Unit, a K9 team and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department helicopter-ASTREA, were called to assist with the search. The search and investigation continued throughout the night and into the next day.
On September 21, at 2:45 p.m., Chappee arrived at the Carlsbad Police Department, located at 2560 Orion Way, to turn himself in.
Officers arrested David Chappee for negligently discharging a firearm and booked him into the Vista Detention Facility.
