OCEANSIDE, Calif. (May 25, 2022) – Tri-City Medical Center (TCMC) was chosen as Business of the Year in the Large Company category at the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s 2022 CBAD Awards held at The Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa.
The CBAD Awards recognizes business distinction and achievement within the city and the surrounding region. TCMC was recognized for innovation in robotic surgery, the team’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital’s award-winning community outreach initiatives and upcoming facility development projects including a remodeled Emergency Room, installation of a new 3T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suite and the construction of a 16-bed, adult inpatient Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF) in partnership with the County of San Diego. Other finalists in the Business of the Year Large Company category included Quidel and Legoland California Resort.
Tri-City Medical Center’s far-reaching community initiative, the COASTAL Commitment, was a standout in their award nomination. COASTAL, which stands for Community Outreach And Support Through Active Leadership, is a partnership with more than 80 non-profits collaborating to address some of the region’s top healthcare access and social needs. One such project is SOCAL, Student Opportunities for Career Awareness and Learning, a workforce development program created by Tri- City Medical Center in partnership with local business and education partners, including the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, to inspire and train the next generation of professionals across multiple emerging industries.
“The COASTAL Commitment is an opportunity for Tri-City Medical Center’s staff to cultivate community improvement programs and share their knowledge to elevate the next generation,” said Aaron Byzak, Chief External Affairs Officer at TCMC and a member of the Carlsbad Chamber’s Board of Directors.
The COASTAL Commitment’s priorities are data driven and align with the findings of the Hospital
Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties Community Health Needs Assessment. The assessment identifies key assets, trends and challenges in the community in order to develop an action plan for the future.
On-hand to receive the CBAD award was Tri-City Healthcare District Board Member George Coulter and executive team members Dr. Gene Ma, Roger Cortez, Jennifer Paroly and Aaron Byzak.

In addition, several of TCMC’s COASTAL Commitment partners also took home awards. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank North County took home Nonprofit of the Year, Mitchell Thorp Foundation took home the Community Impact Award and Ryan Video Production won the Kind Company Inspiration award.
