On November 16, 2023, at around 5:00 a.m., Sheriff’s dispatch received a radio call from a resident in the 1700 block of York Drive in Vista, stating a male suspect was in their backyard and possibly going to break into the home. While on the phone with the Sheriff’s Department, the resident stated the suspect was now breaking into the home and a gunshot was heard. Deputies responded and located the suspect with a gunshot wound. Deputies provided medical aid, and he was taken to the hospital by paramedics. The suspect died at the hospital.
The suspect has been identified as 43-year-old Theodore Anthony Stewart. Stewart was a resident of Vista. There is no indication that the resident of the home knew Stewart. The resident’s name is being withheld at this time. We are still in the early stages of this investigation. We have yet to determine all the facts surrounding this incident, which will determine what additional information may be released. We may be able to release more information at a later date.
