Vista’s Fire Chief Accepts Proclamation from City Council Declaring September as National Preparedness Month

This Proclamation was read by Mayor John Franklin at Tuesdays City Council Meeting

WHEREAS, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has designed September as “National Preparedness Month” and has announced that local jurisdictions focus their attention on preparing older adults for disaster, specifically older adults from communities that may be impacted by all-hazard events which continue to threaten the nation.

The Citizens and residents of California and the City of Vista may be affected by a range of natural and manmade disasters, including droughts, temperature extremes, wildland fires, earthquakes, pandemics, hazardous releases, technological failures, etc., leading to devastating financial losses.

The loss of Life and property damage can be greatly reduced if appropriate emergency preparedness measures are taken before, during, and after a major emergency.

The City recognizes that being properly prepared can reduce fear, anxiety, and the losses that accompany disasters, and therefore believes that families, individuals, and businesses know what to do in the event of a large-scale emergency.

Experts recommend that families and individuals be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least three days (safe shelter, first aid, water, and sanitation.

The City of Vista’s emergency management and disaster preparedness personnel are pro-actively planning now for future natural and man-caused disasters by focusing on effective mitigation efforts, efficient and effective emergency response activities, timely restoration practices, strengthening and revitalizing infrastructure and housing, protecting the health, social, cultural, historic, and environmental fabric of the community.

All of the above preparedness efforts will greatly be enhanced by residents of Vista simply registering online with ALertSanDiego and downloading the SD Emergency Mobile App to receive notification or emergency information related to evacuations and local disaster.

NOW THEREFORE, the Mayor and members of the Vista City Council do hereby proclaim the month of September 2023, as: “NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH”

BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that the Mayor and members of the Vista City Council urge all persons to learn what to do before, during, and after major emergencies to mitigate injuries, loss of life, and property damage; and to encourage community members to reach out and support older residents of Vista during times of emergency.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, we have hereunto set our hands and affixed the seal this 12th day of September 2023
