Work is beginning on the downtown landscaping improvement project along Main Street and Broadway between S. Santa Fe Avenue and Citrus Avenue. The undertaking is part of an ongoing effort to beautify the historic downtown area. The trees and planted areas along the roads in the downtown are an intrinsic part of the personality and identity of the historic area. The goal is to update the landscaping in the large planter areas adjacent to the street parking spaces. The improvements will help keep the downtown looking attractive and inviting in the high traffic areas, and will also nurture and sustain local birds and other wildlife.
The Public Works Park Division will replace a majority of the existing plants and shrubs with low-maintenance, native, and climate-adaptive plant materials. To enhance the plantings, large boulders and new mulch will be installed to add texture, height, and a focal interest.
The new landscaping includes a combination of several plants: Salvia leucantha, Dianella tasmanica, Pennisetum setaceum, Echeveria, Agave angustifolia, Aloe rooikapple, and Phormium rubrum.
“The downtown area is very important to the city and to the residents of Vista,” said Mayor Judy Ritter. “We have made significant progress in revitalizing our historic core and this project is part of our continuing commitment to that priority.”
Over the past several years, the City has completed several other improvement projects, including replacing outdated street luminaires with LED lighting, repairing sidewalks, adding storm water improvements, constructing a new public parking lot, and installing wayfinding signage.
The landscaped improvement project is expected to be completed in early fall.
