World-Renowned Belgian Waffle Ride Set to Return to North City April 30 – May 1

North City to Host European-Inspired Cycling Event Featuring Belgian Waffles, Craft Beer and Entertainment

(San Marcos Calif.) Thousands of world-class cyclists are set to roll into North City as they prepare to compete in the European-inspired Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR) – one of the most challenging cycling races in the U.S. – from April 30 through May 1, 2022. After hosting the largest gravel race in the U.S. in 2021, this year’s BWR at North City will feature a newly augmented 137-mile route with over 50-miles of off-road terrain.

Race day begins with a Belgian waffle feast and ends with a toast of Belgian ale. This year’s event will feature a variety of vendors and a revamped event layout set to highlight the newly opened Draft Republic providing a lively venue for world-renowned cyclists and beer enthusiasts to revel in.

“This is the eleventh anniversary of the Belgian Waffle Ride, and every year we raise the bar to make the race an even greater test of their skills and athleticism,” said Michael Marckx, founder of Monuments of Cycling (MOC) and creator of the Belgian Waffle Ride. “Cyclists will experience a challenging new course and an expanded Unroad Expo footprint. There will also be more fun and entertainment for competitors and spectators alike. Our partnership with North City allows us to provide an unmatched experience for our cyclists as the Belgian Waffle Ride continues to grow in stride with the North City community.”

Regarded as one of the Monuments of Gravel, BWR California is regarded as the most important gravel races in the country with the largest prize purse in gravel history. The BWR’s main event, the Belgian Waffle Ride, will take place on Saturday, April 30. During the course of the weekend, there will be three different races for cyclists to compete in. New this year, the Waffle and Wafer races are running on subsequent days introducing a new challenge for the hardcore thrill seekers. The soon-to-be-legendary Dubbel Header challenge, where riders can ride the 137-mile Waffle on Saturday, and the 77- mile Wafer on Sunday. The Wanna race will also take place on Sunday and features 45-miles of terrain and 3,500 feet of climbing.

“Hosting one of the biggest cycling races in the U.S. for the second year in a row is a huge honor for North City, bringing world-class cyclists and visitors from around the world to our community,” said Andy Tenn, senior manager at Sea Breeze Properties. “This year we have revamped the footprint of the event to seamlessly complement the North City development and ensure our eateries and amenities can stay accessible for visitors, in addition to the riders. We’ve also centered the Exposition adjacent to the newly opened Draft Republic to create a nucleus of craft beer, food and entertainment.”
