CARLSBAD, Calif. — On July 8, 2018 at 22:58 p.m., Officers from the Carlsbad Police Department attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a stolen Acura Integra at El Camino Real and Faraday Avenue. The driver of the stolen vehicle failed to yield to officers, resulting in a pursuit.
The stolen vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed and officers lost sight of the vehicle northbound on El Camino Real north of Cannon Road. The driver of the stolen vehicle subsequently lost control and collided into a BMW i3 travelling southbound on El Camino Real at Kelly Drive. The driver and passenger in the stolen vehicle suffered serious injuries and were transported by the Fire Department to a local area hospital. Both the driver and passenger in the BMW suffered from minor injuries and have been identified as a 27 year-old female and 28 year-old male from Carlsbad.
The occupants of the stolen vehicle have been identified as a 25 year-old male from Oceanside and a 43 year-old female from Poway.
The collision investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol. Northbound El Camino Real from West Ranch Street to Tamarack Avenue is closed and southbound El Camino Real from Tamarack Avenue to Kelly Drive is closed. The roadway is expected to be open in a few hours.
