Early in 2025, the City of Vista partnered with the U.S. Green Building Council – California (USGBC-CA) to create Vista’s Green Business Network. The program brings together businesses committed to promoting sustainable practices and advancing the city’s Climate Action Plan goals.

On Oct. 22, 2025, the city and the Vista Chamber of Commerce hosted a Green Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at Vista Public Works to celebrate the department receiving its Green Business Certification. As a certified Green Business, Vista Public Works demonstrates its commitment to sustainability by investing in clean energy and transitioning to eco-friendly cleaning products and paper.

The Green Business Network program provides free consulting and certification services through the USGBC-CA for more than 30 types of businesses. By joining the network and working toward certification, businesses learn how to implement sustainable actions across energy, pollution prevention, solid waste, transportation, water, and community engagement. For example, replacing fluorescent light bulbs with LED bulbs is one of many ways businesses can qualify for Green Business Certification.

“The city offers the Vista Green Business Network as a tool to support and recognize local businesses in their pursuit of sustainable initiatives,” said Cassidy McCarthy,

the city’s Climate Action Plan program administrator. “Having our own Public Works Department become certified shows the city’s internal dedication to sustainability and keeping Vista beautiful.”
