CARLSBAD — A controversial mixed-use redevelopment project along Carlsbad Village Drive was greenlit on Tuesday by the City Council.
The council, though, had little choice but to approve the project under several state laws setting nearly impossible standards for a denial or reduction in density. The council voted 4-1, with Councilwoman Melanie Burkholder opposed.
The project by Carlsbad-based Rincon Homes consists of 50 condos, eight of which are designated affordable units, and more than 3,801 square feet of commercial use on Carlsbad Village Drive between Harding and Jefferson streets adjacent to a dentist’s office. The project, which is on the site of a former bank, falls under the Housing Accountability Act, Senate Bill 330, Assembly Bill 2097, state Density Bonus Law, and AB 1287, Eric Lardy, assistant director of Community Development, and Edward Valenzula, a senior planner, said.
