SAN MARCOS, Calif. – After a record-setting semester in Fall 2019, Cal State San Marcos Athletics outdid itself once again in Spring 2020 as the Cougars tallied a new departmental grade-point average record of 3.41.
Of the department’s 13 teams, 10 recorded their highest team GPA ever in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track & field, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf and volleyball. Every team in the department had a GPA of at least 3.147.
“In a time with great adversity, I am beyond proud of our student-athletes for persevering,” CSUSM Director of Athletics Jennifer Milo said. “I am also incredibly proud of our coaches and staff for continuing to provide support and resources to make our academic achievements possible. This speaks volumes for who we are and what we stand for.”
Women’s soccer posted the highest semester GPA in the department at 3.706. The rest of the field saw women’s cross country at 3.580, women’s golf at 3.547, women’s basketball at 3.517, women’s track & field at 3.516, volleyball at 3.486, men’s cross county at 3.394, men’s basketball at 3.350, men’s soccer at 3.315, softball at 3.269, men’s golf at 3.216, baseball at 3.189 and men’s track & field at 3.147.
CSUSM had 37 student-athletes earn Mangrum Award honors with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the spring – the highest number in athletic department history. Of all student-athletes, 78% earned a 3.0 or higher while 50% earned a 3.5 or higher.
