Southern California author Rina Torri knew she had to find the perfect setting for Secret of the Jetty, first mystery novel in her new series, The SoCal Sleuths.
She conducted her search by walking up and down the distinctive beaches that dot North Coast San Diego, perusing each one, over the course of several months.
“Finally, one day, while standing on top of one of the twin jetties at South Ponto Beach, I realized it was the ideal location for the compelling story I had in mind. With the sweeping view of the ocean, the channel between the jetties that leads to a lagoon, plus the configuration and varied dimensions of the rocks, this spot provided the precise staging needed for my plot,” she said.
Torri knew all along her protagonists would come straight from her earlier book, No Rocking Chairs Yet, about three dynamic baby boomers who regularly walk and talk along the beach about the changes, challenges, and situations in their everyday lives.
“They are almost real to me; I know everything about them. So I asked myself, why not take these same three women, let them don new hats, and become the hottest sleuths in North Coast San Diego. The mystery begins when the trio, out for an early morning walk, make a shocking discovery that draws them into the most baffling murder case to ever hit the SoCal beaches. Using their ingenuity and inventiveness, they pursue a series of clues that lead to a cringeworthy revelation.
Before authoring books, Torri enjoyed a longtime career as a feature story writer for numerous magazines and newspapers, including the Maryland Gazette, Baltimore Magazine, Gannett Newspapers, Pittsburgh’s Business Magazine, Milwaukee Sentinel, and several others. Her previous book, No Rocking Chairs Yet, was rated “outstanding” at the Writers Digest 21st Annual SP Book Awards.
