Carlsbad City Library Announces Winter Cinema Series
The Carlsbad City Library is pleased to announce the fall and winter lineup for the Carlsbad Cinema Series at the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, located in the Carlsbad City Library complex at 1775 Dove Lane. The series features a pre-show introduction and post-show discussion with a director or film expert. Arrive at 1:30 p.m. for a pre-show introduction. The film screening begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free and seating is first come, first served.

Saturday, Nov. 18, 1:30 p.m. – Meet the Director: Brent Winebrenner’s Guatemala: The Land of the Maya(2017, NR, 80 min.)

Film director and producer Brent Winebrenner will discuss and present his latest film, Guatemala: The Land of the Maya. This beautiful travelogue celebrates both the ancient and contemporary Mayan people by documenting modern adaptations of traditional practices, exploring fabled places, and examining the historic tension between Mayan customs and Spanish imperialism.

Brent Winebrenner is a freelance editorial and corporate location photographer, filmmaker and producer with experience in over 60 countries. His work has been published in National Geographic Traveler, National Geographic Adventure, Sunset, LA Times, NY Times and dozens of Lonely Planet publications

Saturday, Jan. 27, 1:30 p.m. – Moonlight (2016, R, 111 minutes)

Winner of Academy Award for Best Picture 2017, Moonlight chronicles the evolution of Chiron – a young, African-American, gay man that comes of age in 1980’s Miami. Neglected as a child, introverted Chiron struggles to find himself throughout childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood as he grapples with bullying, his sexuality and falling in love.

Introduction and discussion led by Brandon Cesmat, professor at California State University San Marcos.
