Join Oceanside Public Library for a Black History Month Celebration online on Saturday, February 12 at 11 a.m with the Soultry Sisters. They will lead an educational and interactive workshop where they will highlight historical Black figures who have contributed to the health & wellness industry, reflect on the activists who’ve used holistic health & wellness to sustain themselves throughout social justice movements, and facilitate an interactive wellness activity.
The 2022 theme for Black History Month is Black Health & Wellness. According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASAALH), “This theme acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birth workers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.”
The Junious sisters, Alyssa and Toni, created arts + wellness collective Soultry Sisters to empower women to live creative and healthy lives. They were born and raised in San Diego and wanted to give back to the arts and wellness community in North County. Soultry Sisters believe that arts and wellness is a birthright and should be accessible to all. They curate events, workshops, and meetups centered around soul care, creative expression, sustainability, and collective healing. See SoultrySisters.com for more about their mission.
