To help create a more walkable Barrio neighborhood, the city is looking for public input to help guide the placement of new pedestrian lights along four street corridors: Harding Street, Madison Street, Roosevelt Street and Magnolia Avenue.

Use the city’s mapping tool to drop a pin in a specific spot in the Barrio where you think more light is needed. If you need assistance with the tool or want to provide feedback another way, you can always reach out to communications@carlsbadca.gov. Background
Adding new pedestrian lights in the Barrio is the second part of a two-phase lighting project to enhance safety and visibility and promote walking and biking in the Barrio. Over the last year, 14 new streetlights have been installed to help light up streets and intersections. Eight are currently turned on.

Streetlights are mounted on higher poles or existing utility poles and are meant to be brighter to light up streets and intersections. Pedestrian lights are lower in intensity and on shorter poles to light up walkways.

These lighting improvements are outlined in the Village and Barrio Master Plan, enhancing safety, livability and community character in the Barrio.

Next steps
Staff will be preparing a technical lighting assessment, evaluating electrical infrastructure and power availability and existing site conditions and constraints. Public input, along with the lighting assessment study will be used to help guide design of pedestrian light placement in the Barrio.

Following project design, staff will install new pedestrian lights in phases based on funding availability and coordination with San Diego Gas & Electric for power.
