Regional Bicycle & Trail Advocates Support Ocean Kamp in Oceanside

March 15, 2022 (San Diego, CA) — The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC) and the San Diego Mountain Biking Association (SDMBA), two of San Diego County’s leading bicycle and trail advocacy organizations announce their support of Ocean Kamp, a proposed mixed-use plan in Oceanside. SDCBC and SDMBA have endorsed Ocean Kamp’s vision to create new multi-use trails and a bike pump track onsite, enhance connections to existing trail networks and encourage overall greater use of bicycles.

“Ocean Kamp’s plan has thoughtfully incorporated opportunities for the daily use of bicycles as part of a vibrant mixed-use destination,” said Andy Hanshaw, Executive Director of SDCBC. “Ocean Kamp would create miles of multi-use space to ride onsite and connect into the San Luis Rey River Trail network and nearby transit stops. These benefits align with our vision to promote bicycling as a mainstream, safe and enjoyable form of transportation and recreation.”

At the heart of Ocean Kamp, a 4.5-acre, state-of-the art wave lagoon would allow visitors and residents to enjoy surfing, swimming and paddle boarding, among other events and activities. The proposed community would also include several miles of public trails, 20-acres of open space, a public surfboard shaping bay, a bike pump track, as well as cultural and surf heritage exhibitions and displays.

“Ocean Kamp will be an exciting place for local and visiting outdoor activity enthusiasts and mountain bikers to enjoy for years to come,” said SDMBA Executive Director Susie Murphy. “The site’s focus on outdoor recreation, creation of a new bike pump track and vision for multi-use public trails with the opportunity to incorporate progressive bike design features make it a special place for Oceanside and all San Diego County.”

Plans for Ocean Kamp include up to 700 new homes comprised of apartments, condominium units, townhomes and senior housing. At a minimum, 5 percent of onsite residential units would be deed-restricted as affordable housing units. Ocean Kamp also includes 134,000 square feet of commercial space including a mix of creative offices, medical offices, retail and restaurants, with a focus on local companies, purveyors and artisans as tenants. Lodging offerings would include an Airstream trailer camping park and a 300-room boutique hotel with private casitas.

Ocean Kamp has earned official support from the San Diego North Economic Development Council and Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, among other community supporters. The plan is expected to come before the Oceanside Planning Commission in spring 2022 with an estimated completion of construction in spring 2024.
