CARLSBAD, Calif.—The City of Carlsbad Police Department is actively recruiting participants for the next Senior Volunteer Patrol Academy. The academy is scheduled for late summer of 2018.
The Senior Volunteer Patrol (SVP) draws on the experience and mature judgment of members that are 50 years and older. The patrol supports the Police Department by increasing law enforcement services to the community. Volunteer patrol functions include:
· Neighborhood patrols
· Traffic control
· Mobile Police Command Post operation
· Handicapped violation enforcement
· Safety Center tours
· Visits and calls to housebound seniors (YANA)
· Community presentations
· Assistance at special events
To begin, volunteer patrol members attend a 95-hour academy followed by 60 hours of “on the job training.” During the academy participants receive training in traffic control, safety, first aid and CPR, ethics, radio communications, traffic citations, crime prevention and hands-on driving safety. After training, each patrol member contributes a minimum of 28 hours per month.
Applicants are required to meet the following requirements:
· Be at least 50 years of age
· Be a U.S. citizen
· Possess a valid California Driver’s License
· Have proof of auto insurance
· Have no felony convictions
· Be in good physical condition
· Pass a background investigation and polygraph
