Ed has dedicated his life to public service. After graduating Poway High School, Ed joined the Army to serve his country and explore options for his working life. His first assignment was to the Federal Republic of Germany where he served in an Intelligence Unit. While he enjoyed his first enlistment, Ed wanted to see more of what the Army offered so he reenlisted for an assignment to Texas. Ed was able to work several assignments in Texas before the Army took advantage of the Top Secret clearance they invested in him and reassigned him.

It was in this assignment that Ed decided his future was in law enforcement in San Diego County. He returned to San Diego to attend the sheriff’s academy. After graduating as a deputy sheriff, Ed worked several assignments ranging from patrol, traffic; as a field training officer and a detective. Ed was promoted to sergeant and supervised in the jails, patrol, as an internal affairs investigator and led a team of homicide detectives before promoting to lieutenant.

Ed enjoyed his time as a patrol lieutenant at the sheriff’s busiest station and as the sheriff’s emergency response manager before he was promoted to captain. Ed worked courts, personnel and his favorite assignment as the “chief of police” for the City of Santee. This assignment also included the command of the communities of Lakeside, Flinn Springs, Alpine, Crest, unincorporated El Cajon and primary responsibility for the Barona, Sycuan and Viejas Indian reservations.

Ed retired from the sheriff’s department to take a position as the security manager for an international non-profit trade school in Carlsbad. He was subsequently asked to work at the Metropolitan Transit System where he rose to the position of deputy director of transit security.

While with the sheriff and after, Ed volunteered on several non-profit boards and agencies as well as commissions and committees in San Marcos where her and his wife Carole live. Ed credits his experiences supporting regional governments for piquing his interest in how local government works to serve our communities. In 2020, Ed ran successfully for his first term on the San Marcos City Council.

In service to his community and the region, Ed serves on multiple local and regional committees and boards with a focus on improving the communities in which we live. Ed has received commendations for his service from local and regional elected leaders, the San Diego Sheriff, American Legion, and the National Sheriff’s Association.

Ed holds a bachelor’s degree in business management and a master’s degree in organizational leadership. Ed & Carole have two grown daughters, both of whom live in north county.
