I wanted to provide an important update regarding our steps to address the ongoing home insurance crisis affecting many in our community, particularly those in wildfire-prone areas.
Fire insurance is one of the most common issues I hear about in the community. It’s truly heartbreaking to hear so many stories of skyrocketing insurance premiums or homeowners losing their fire insurance altogether. Unfortunately, fire insurance is a unique challenge for the county because we have no direct control over the industry, which is regulated by the state.
However, to help our residents, I submitted a Board letter, which passed this Wednesday, aimed at alleviating some of this burden. The San Diego County Fire Protection District (SDCFPD) will now assist residents in applying for the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety’s (IBHS) Wildfire Prepared Home program. This program offers significant discounts for homes that meet specific fire safety requirements, providing relief from high insurance costs and better protection for homes against wildfire risks.
I understand how critical this issue is. While we cannot control the insurance market, we are doing everything we can to help mitigate the impact. I will update you on when this program will officially begin and how you can participate.
Thank you for your continued support. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
