CHICO, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos outfielder Adam Lovato has been named the 2021 CCAA Baseball Championship Scholar for his efforts in the classroom.
Now in his second year for the Cougars, Lovato keeps a perfect grade-point average in his pursuits of a degree in chemistry.
“I am so proud of Adam and all that he has accomplished as a student-athlete at CSUSM,” noted Cal State San Marcos Director of Athletics Jennifer Milo. “This honor demonstrates his work ethic in the classroom as well as the baseball field.”
On the field, the San Diego native played nine games and made six starts in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. Lovato crossed the plate twice in his first year with the Cougars, scoring runs in wins against Saint Catherine and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
“Adam is an outstanding teammate who goes above and beyond to help with study habits and other ways to help his teammates succeed in the classroom,” explained Cal State San Marcos head baseball coach Matt Guiliano. “Although I applaud Adam on receiving such an honor, I am not surprised he is receiving another academic nod. Adam is relentless in his work ethic on and off the field and will continue to have success in anything he chooses to take on.
“The ability to balance his academic and athletic workload is not an easy feat. He is extremely organized and knows what needs to be done in order to achieve his goals and personal expectations. He prioritizes what needs to get accomplished, and with everything going on these past two seasons and the adversity faced with the COVID pandemic, I couldn’t be more proud of Adam for his perseverance and what he has already earned in his young career!”
Lovato is the first Cal State San Marcos baseball player to earn the distinction of Championship Scholar. He joins Carly Slack (softball) and David Bonds (men’s cross country) as Cougars who have taken the award in 2020-21.
Now in its fourth season, the CCAA Championship Scholar Award program recognizes the academic and athletic achievement of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also excelling in the classroom.
The Championship Scholar Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the final CCAA championship site in each conference-sponsored sport. For the 2020-21 academic year, all participating student-athletes in each sport will receive consideration for the award.
This year’s slate of nominations for this prestigious academic distinction in the sport of baseball included Grant Bunker (Stanislaus State), Gerardo Castaneda (Cal State LA), Kyler Crone (San Francisco State), Nicholas Henry (Cal State Dominguez Hills), Ryon Knowles (Cal Poly Pomona), Chase Lindemann (Cal State Monterey Bay), Noah Lyndall (Sonoma State), Kristian Scott (Chico State), Tyler Williams (Cal State San Bernardino), and Mike Woinarowicz (Cal State East Bay).
