Annie Review A Night to Remember!

By Koko McDowell
The Star Theatre Company presents Annie in Oceanside, CA. Opening night was a huge success. The Star Theatre, a community-based theatre with 440 seats, welcomed guests to their new and improved venue with the production of Annie.

What a wonderful play that kept my 12-year-old son engaged the entire two hours. It is refreshing to expose my son to something outside of the digital world that is able to keep his attention for more than five minutes. Annie did just that! Not only was he impressed with the Star Theatre, also its grand marque in lights, and its red-carpet entrance into the main lobby. He was intrigued by the diverse cast from young children to adults. This production is definitely for the whole family.

I really enjoyed how the actors embodied their character. A few characters really stood out in their roles, which significantly contributed to the overall success of the production. Miss Hannigan, played by Katie Marquardt, did a fabulous job expressing her distaste for children. With her sarcastic murmuring and levity, she kept us laughing throughout her scenes. Molly, played by Genevieve Mclimoil, was so believable and perfect in her role. With her face expressions and intentionality, Genevieve was owning Molly. Overall, the orphans were impressive. When they sang ‘It’s a Hard Knock Life’, they sounded like an army of orphans.

The choreography with the mops looked and sounded great, as they were all in sync. Grace Farrell, played by Victoria Corey, and Oliver Warbucks, played by Christopher Hoolihan, fit their roles very well. I loved Grace’s stature and how her vocals matched her image. As one depicted as refined and high-class, it was no surprise that when she sang her style stood out from everyone else throughout the play. Christopher did well as daddy Warbucks. He gave just the right balance of energy between Grace and Annie.

Last but not least, Annie, played by Charity Rose. Charity has a bright future ahead of her. As Annie, Charity was able to hold her own every time she sang individually and with a group. It was obvious that she was comfortable in her role and she delivered flawlessly. With not only a strong singing voice, her speaking voice demonstrated her confidence in her ability to BE Annie.

Although there were a few wrinkles to iron out, which is expected on opening night, the overall play was absolutely amazing. I would like to commend the entire production team and cast for a job well done. This play is a must see, families and kids of all ages would enjoy it. It is always nice to be able to expose our children to the world of performing art.
