Every April, we celebrate the Month of the Military Child, a time to honor the resilience and sacrifices of the more than 1.6 million military children in our country. This month is not just about recognizing the children of active-duty service members; it’s also an opportunity to reflect on the unique challenges faced by children during their parents’ military to civilian transition.
The lesser discussed challenge of the transition from military to civilian, is the impact it can have on children. Moving off a military installation or even across country, means children are required to enroll in a new school, make new friends while losing a familiar support system, and in some cases lose valuable resources available to active-duty parents.
Here at FFWW, we focus not only on the needs of our women veterans, but also of their children. 70% of women veterans we serve have one or more children, and of those that receive financial assistance, 62% are single parents.
Balancing the demands of parenting with the need to establish a new career, continue education, find housing, and access healthcare can be overwhelming, especially for single parents transitioning from military to civilian life. One of the most significant challenges our veteran families experience is the lack of affordable and reliable childcare.
Our programs at Foundation for Women Warriors help the entire family successfully navigate the transition. Our veterans are empowered to cultivate a financially secure future for not just themselves, but their children.
Our Childcare Assistance program ensures our veterans’ children have safe and reliable care and aren’t left out of summer learning. Through our Bright Beginnings Baby Showers, new babies and moms do not go without necessities, like cribs, car seats, and strollers. Even our financial education offers courses on how parents can teach their children good money habits.
Month of the Military Child is a time to not only reflect on the unique challenges faced by our military and veteran children, but to create solutions. Our solution: Today through May 31st 2023 we are calling on our community to help us raise $100,000. in support of our 2023 Childcare Campaign.
By providing support for post-military childcare, addressing financial insecurity, and creating resources to help children also adjust during the transition to civilian life, we can honor the service of these brave women and ensure that their children thrive.
