Big Fourth Quarter Lifts Cougars Over Jacks, 57-43 Women’s Basketball

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (6-2, 3-0 CCAA) extended its win streak to six with a 57-43 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt (4-3, 2-1 CCAA) on Thursday night in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Katie FitzGerald closed the first quarter and opened the second with a 3-pointer to put CSUSM up 19-13.
The Cougars trailed 26-24 at the break after shooting 15.4% (2-of-13) from the field in the second quarter.
Fifteen of CSUSM’s 24 points in the first half came from 3-pointers.
Gallegos opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, sparking a 10-2 run as CSUSM held a 34-28 lead at the 6:22 mark.
The Jacks answered with their own 6-2 run to end the third quarter at 37-34 CSUSM.
The Cougars went on a 17-4 run in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 54-38 lead.
CSUSM outscored the Jacks 20-9 in the final quarter.
The Cougars shot 43.8%(7-of-16) in the fourth quarter while holding Humboldt to 21.4% (3-of-14).
FAST BREAKS
CSUSM dominated the boards, outrebounding the Toros 43-37.
The Cougars led for 32:05 of the game while the Jacks were on top for 5:05.
CSUSM shot 31.6% (18-of-57) from the field while Humboldt finished at 29.3% (17-of-58).
The Cougars sunk 11 3-pointers, two shy of the single-season record set at Cal State LA on Jan. 2, 2022.
CSUSM is now 10-5 in the all-time series against Humboldt and 5-1 in The Sports Center.
With four blocked shots in the contest, CSUSM has tallied four or more in all but one game this season.
Twenty-four of Humboldt’s points came inside the paint.
CSUSM tallied 21 points off the Jacks’ 15 turnovers.
Gallegos’ 20 points were a season high and her fifth time tallying 20 or more points as a Cougar.
