There is no doubt that folks were excited and ready for the opening of Vista’s newest restaurant, Black Bear Diner, as shown by the line that formed at 5:30 am for the 6:00 am opening on Tuesday. This popular comfort-food restaurant experienced some delays in opening, but is now fully open and ready for the expected crowds. Black Bear Diners always seem to have. Known for large portions, the diner encourages people not to waste anything and to ask for take-home boxes to enjoy their food later.

Returning for breakfast, after taking part in the “soft opening” on Saturday, I ordered the smaller portion of biscuits and gravy with crispy bacon and a bowl of grits. I generally judge a diner by their gravy at breakfast, and Black Bear did not disappoint with the great-tasting, hearty gravy that covered a large biscuit. Grits are a Southern thing, and theirs were not runny and were very creamy. The coffee is very good, served in large mugs.

A sizable number of the Vista Sheriff’s Department were enjoying breakfast on Tuesday, and as I spoke with people who had shown up, many were from outside the Vista area, underscoring the popularity of the Black Bear Diner franchises. Owner Karan Gogris was busy speaking with patrons and his employees on this busy Tuesday morning. He said there will be a Grand Opening Red Ribbon Ceremony a little while later, after they get through opening and getting established. There is a warm welcoming atmosphere when you arrive and you are quickly seated, even at the busiest times. I drove by the diner later in the day and noticed around 15 people waiting outside for lunch. There are lots of choices for dining in Vista, and Black Bear Diner is one you should not miss.
