Senior Smoke Detector Program

0

Smoke detectors save lives
.
Senior citizens are more likely to die in home fires than any other segment of the population in the United States. Based on this statistic, the San Marcos Fire Department has teamed up with the Burn Institute to provide senior citizens assistance with their smoke detectors’ maintenance.

To qualify for a free inspection, you must be a citizen of San Marcos, be at least 55 years of age, and need assistance in determining if your smoke detector is in good working condition. If your smoke detector needs to be replaced, one will be provided free of charge.

Jean Cole Commitment to Service Award

0

Operation Hope-Vista is pleased to share the call for nominations for our first annual Jean Cole award. Jean herself received our first Commitment to Service award to honor the 40 plus years of service she provided to better life for all of us living in North County. She accepted the award just a few short months before she lost her battle with cancer.

It is our honor and privilege to pass that honor on to someone else in the community who shares the same commitment and passion for community as Jean did.

Please share this nomination form with your networks. Help us honor Jean’s legacy by honoring the work of the next generation of community servants.

Please call our Resource Development Manager Nicole Ketcher with any questions @ 760-536-3880 ext. 303 or send an email to nicole@operationhopeshelter.org. Nominations are due by November 15.

Commitment to service and community were the pillars of Jean Cole’s life. If something needed doing either she was doing it herself, or “encouraging” others to take on the challenge. Her smile was infectious, and saying “no” to her was an impossibility. As a longtime resident of Vista, and North County, she worked hard to make living in North County better for all of us – her commitment to service was a reflection of her work at the YMCA, the City of Vista, the United Methodist Church of Vista and, her dedication to the clients and staff of Operation HOPE-Vista.

How to Trade a Desk Job for the Deep Blue Sea

When your passion is the ocean, working behind a desk can be stifling. Joshua Fleming, owner of Meric Spearfishing and Free Dive Shop, developed a passion for the ocean as a kid while spending his summers in Oceanside. “I got my start in free diving, just snorkeling around the jetties here in Oceanside,” said Fleming.

Meric Spearfishing and Free Dive Shop has everything you need for the sport. “I carry everything for the beginner, to advanced diver. I try to help people out and give the best deal I can. I don’t have a ton of overhead. It’s just me in here. It’s my shop so I kinda get to make the rules too, to an extent,” Fleming said with a smile. “I’m not a salesman. I give people the facts…I give my opinion about different equipment, let them know what works for me. I also tell them about feedback I receive from other divers. I like to give people both sides of it. I don’t just try to sell them on one thing.”

If someone wants to get started in the sport of free dive/spearfishing, it can be a little difficult in the winter without the proper suit, gloves, and booties. “Unlike surfing, your whole body is submerged so you lose a lot of your body heat through your hands, head, and feet,” explained Fleming. “You can start with a surf wetsuit but things you will really need to get started are; a quality pair of fins, mask, snorkel, a waist weight belt so you can get down in the water. You need to get comfortable with free diving first and once you’re comfortable with that, you can get into spearfishing.”

Fleming offers a wide variety of items including several lines of high-speed swim fins, wetsuits, hoods, gloves and booties along with low volume masks. (Low volume refers to the amount of open space inside the mask which helps conserve oxygen when equalizing air pressure under water.) With warmer weather coming, Fleming is adding gear focused towards the beginner and tourists with inexpensive packages of masks, snorkels, and fins.

As you would expect Fleming also carries a wide range of Spearfishing guns with some of them made locally. “Eventually I want to dedicate one section to guns made by craftsmen here in North County,” said Fleming.

Great snorkeling, diving, and spearfishing experiences are easily accessible. “What I tell new people, without giving away my secret spots, is to look at Google Earth. The entire coast is lined with reefs you can just swim out to.”

To learn more about Meric Spearfishing and Free Dive Shop and the discounts available to clubs, law enforcement, firefighters and military, visit www.mericspearfishing.com, call 760-547-1587, or stop by the shop at 605 Mission Ave, Oceanside, CA 92054.

City of Carlsbad Fire Chief Warns Weather Alert: Fire Danger

0

With hot, dry, windy conditions forecast the next couple of days, City of Carlsbad public safety officials remind the public to take steps to prevent wildfires.

“One small spark in these conditions can quickly lead to a fast-spreading wildfire,” said City of Carlsbad Fire Chief Michael Davis. “As we saw in the recent Poinsettia Fire, once a fire starts in these conditions, it can quickly take off.”

Davis recommends residents use caution and avoid any activity that could lead to sparks near flammable material or open space, including:
Lawn mowing
Edging
Using leaf blowers
Setting a piece of hot gardening equipment in the brush
Electrical work
Using outdoor grinding or cutting tools
Outdoor grilling

Davis also recommends using caution when driving off-road vehicles or even driving on the road’s shoulder during dry, windy conditions. Stopping or parking in the brush can quickly start a fire. When towing a trailer, make sure your trailer hitch chains and cables don’t drag on the roadway.

The City of Carlsbad recommends all residents review its free guide and video series for tips on protecting their homes from wildfires.

The city also has an Emergency Preparedness Guide on its website and a link to sign up for Alert San Diego, the region’s reverse 9-1-1 emergency notification system. The County’s emergency app sdemergency can be downloaded through your device’s app store.

Terramar Area Coastal Improvement Project Open House

0

Based on community input, the City of Carlsbad has updated designs for a project to improve safety, traffic flow and the overall coastal experience in the area around Cannon Road and Carlsbad Boulevard, known locally as the Terramar neighborhood.

See the latest designs.

If you want to know more, please come to a meeting and talk to the project team or contact the project manager (info below):

Terramar Area Coastal Improvement Project
Open House
Wednesday, Nov. 8, 6 to 8 p.m.
City of Carlsbad Faraday Center
1635 Faraday Ave.

The Project

The city has been working with the community for the past few years to address safety, parking and traffic concerns around the Terramar neighborhood and to enhance the bluff top area across from the Power Plant. We’ve created several design options, gotten feedback, made refinements and now have the final draft designs ready to share.

Next Steps
The project designs are scheduled to be presented to the City Council in early 2018 for input and selection of the preferred project design.
The final design and environmental analysis will then be presented to the Planning Commission for approval. We are currently shooting for spring 2018.
This project requires Coastal Commission approval, which typically takes six to nine months.
Once we have all the necessary approvals and permits, we’ll put the project out to bid for final design and construction. The project already has funding allocated in the city budget.
Once construction starts, the improvements should take about 18 months to complete.
What’s the bottom line? Making any changes along our coastline requires a lot of review and consideration – for good reason. If all goes according to plan, residents can expect to see these improvements completed sometime in mid 2020.

For More Information

If you can’t make the meeting, feel free to contact the project manager if you have questions or would like more information, contact Jonathan Schauble, 760-602-2762 or jonathan.schauble@carlsbadca.gov.
