Soroptimists Seek Applicants for Cash Award

0

September 2, 2022 – Soroptimist clubs in North County San Diego are looking for women in the area who are single head of household to apply for Soroptimist’s “Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards.” To be eligible, women must be the primary support of their families and enrolled in, or accepted into, a college or vocational/trade school program. The Live Your Dream Award is not a scholarship; the cash award can be used to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation. The winners will be notified in early January 2023 and honored at a later date, and one awardee from each club will be eligible to compete for additional cash awards at the regional and national level. Award amounts vary from club to club. Past recipients may not apply.

Soroptimist International (SI) is a worldwide organization with 5 Federations. Last year, the SI of the Americas Federation distributed more than $2.8 million in education awards to about 1,800 women. Over half of Live Your Dream Awards recipients are survivors of domestic violence, trafficking or sexual assault. Nearly all have overcome enormous obstacles, including poverty, teen pregnancy, and drug or alcohol addiction.

“SI Oceanside-Carlsbad was proud to award $13,500 to 12 women this year and next year we expect the award total to increase significantly and thereby reach more women” said SIOC club president Marybeth Glenn, who added

“This could not be accomplished without our generous donors, partners and committed SIOC members dedicated to SI’s mission of providing women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment.”

Jackie Huyck, of SI Vista and North County Inland, said her club awarded $15,500 in awards to four women in 2022. “We expect a similar amount to be given next year, thanks to the community generously supporting our club’s fundraising efforts” she said. “This is real, local dollars helping women in our community who are working to make a better life for themselves and their families but need a little help,” she said. The online application portal is at bit.ly/LYDA-apply and the deadline to apply is November 15, 2022. Club members are happy to help applicants fill out their online applications. Benefits of Chiropractic Care Other than Pain Relief

0

Chiropractic is a hands-on approach to medicine that focuses on spinal manipulation to improve health. Your spine is at the center of your musculoskeletal system, and if it’s misaligned, you can experience pain or discomfort in a variety of ways. One of the most common reasons patients visit a chiropractor is pain. Back pain, neck pain, and headaches are some of the top conditions chiropractors address. But did you know that there are benefits to chiropractic care that go beyond pain relief? Through chiropractic adjustments, your body is able to function efficiently. Maintaining health naturally can prevent health complications before they start, minimizing the need for drugs or surgical procedures to keep you feeling well long-term.

Nervous system function
Your spine contains bundles of nerves that connect your entire body to your brain. Your nervous system controls every bodily function, from digestion to immunity. Spinal misalignments can impede your nervous system and cause almost imperceptible changes in how your body works. Chiropractic care enhances your nervous system function and boosts blood flow throughout your body. Removing interference improves your nervous system’s ability to carry nerve impulses to the brain, enhancing whole body performance.

Immune system
Your immune system is influenced by your nervous system and endocrine system. Because chiropractic care helps your body operate at its peak performance, it can strengthen your immune system and help you fight off germs.

Range of motion
Even if you’re not in pain, your joints, connective tissue, and ligaments change and deteriorate over time. Chiropractic care manipulates your body to maintain and even improve your range of motion.
Chiropractic improves joint mobility and may reduce your chances of suffering joint and cartilage deterioration later in life. Chiropractic treatment also addresses muscle strength, helping to loosen tight muscles and strengthen weaker muscles.

Digestion
Your digestive system and nervous system are closely linked. Nerves in your spine control how your body digests food, while subluxations, or spinal misalignments, can interfere with digestion.
Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, constipation, and even heartburn can be relieved with chiropractic care. Through chiropractic adjustments and removing blockages in the nerves that control digestion, you can see improvements in the way you feel.

Quality of sleep
Misalignments in the spine — even those that don’t cause noticeable pain — might be interfering with your sleep. Regular chiropractic adjustments take unhealthy strain and stress off of the nerves and bones in your spine, promoting relaxation.

You don’t have to be in pain to experience the benefits of chiropractic adjustment. While treatment varies for every individual, many patients see their overall wellness improve with chiropractic care. Contact NuSpine today to learn more.

Commercial Burglary Arrest – Vista

0

On Sunday, September 4th, at about 7:30 PM, Deputies from the Vista Station responded to a commercial burglary in the 1600 block of South Melrose Drive in the City of Vista. After the deputies arrived and began their investigation, they discovered the business had been broken into and two cash registers had been taken. The amount of money inside each register was unknown.

As the deputies continued to investigate, they learned the suspect had fled to an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Live Oak Road. Deputies responded to the location and with the help of a K9 and the Sheriff’s Department helicopter unit, ASTREA, they were able to locate the suspect. Deputies contacted Victor Diaz (DOB 09/14/1984) at an apartment inside of the complex and took him into custody without incident.

Inside the apartment the deputies located the two missing cash registers, about $200 in currency, and the clothing worn by Diaz during the burglary. Additionally, the deputies recovered a stolen handgun and ammunition taken in a burglary only weeks prior. As a result of the arrest, Vista Detectives were able to link Diaz to five separate burglaries in the area.

Diaz was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on several felony charges including Burglary, Felon in Possession of a firearm, and Possession of Stolen Property. The investigation is ongoing in order to determine if Diaz is linked to any other burglaries in the North County.

Restarting the Vista Brewers’ Guild to Champion the City’s Culture and Community

0

Vista’s Brewers’ Guild was initially created when a few breweries were looking to coordinate music licenses with the City of Vista, and since then, it has united the local brewing community across topics as varied as outdoor seating during COVID and partnering with restaurants for kitchen-to-taproom food delivery.

“The Vista Brewers’ Guild was first established when there were only a few breweries in Vista, and it was about establishing parameters that allowed all of us to access the same city resources,” said Tristan Faulk-Webster, co-owner of Aztec Brewing Co. and former president of the Vista Brewers’ Guild. “We worked together on standardizing music licenses initially. We went from only having permits for acoustic musicians to full bands now, which is fantastic, because we are able to support artists, provide work for more people, and give our city a sense of culture.”

Fostering community is a notable underpinning of the Guild, according to Faulk-Webster, who mentioned that part of the vision behind the guild is modeled off the spirit of Temecula’s wine tourism reputation. “A successful brewery scene encourages guests and residents to enjoy Vista and support its economy,” said Faulk-Webster. “Working together as an industry has helped us do things like partner with restaurants to run food next door or across the street, so brewery patrons can eat delicious food without leaving a tasting room. Since most tasting rooms do not have kitchens, this is a win-win for restaurants and breweries.”

The Vista Brewers’ Guild is expected to be back in full swing within a month after the COVID pandemic necessitated a hiatus of the group, and the first topic of interest is responding to changing regulations around outdoor seating that was created during COVID. “Now that the state of emergency is over, we want to see if there is a way we can keep some outdoor seating,” said Faulk-Webster. “Many of our customers are still cautious, so outdoor options are still important. And it’s Vista, being outdoors with a beer is pretty perfect.”

Faulk-Webster continued to say that the most important role of the guild is facilitating ongoing productive conversations with the City of Vista. “One of the benefits is that we have a friendly dialogue with the city, so we can voice our needs. They have been receptive to working with us, and we are able to discuss things. That way, they have awareness about how certain guidelines or codes will work for us.”

When asked about the vision of the Vista Brewers’ Guild Faulk-Webster said, “It’s about creating an atmosphere. In some ways, Vista’s breweries have given the community the chance to get to know their neighbors. Tasting rooms are different than bars. They reach a wider demographic – people of all ages and walks of life wind up here. And when we work together, there is a friendly vibe to the brewing community. When someone in one tasting room asks for a recommendation for another brewery, they get a genuine suggestion. That comes from us working together for the industry as a whole, and not just our own brewery.”

In support of the brewing industry, Vista Is Open recently launched a walking beer tour podcast that can be found on vistaisopen.com. Listeners can learn the ins and outs of local breweries while walking from tasting room to tasting room.

State Legislative Session has Adjourned

0
Sacramento California state capitol

By Assemblymember Marie Waldron
The 2021-2022 legislative session is history — we adjourned around 1:30 a.m. on September 1st. As usual, some of the most significant legislation was delayed until the last days, with votes sometimes occurring late at night and in the wee hours of the morning.
In light of continuing attempts to place Sexually Violent Predators (SVPs) in rural San Diego County, I was a big supporter SB 1034 which creates more structure and transparency to make local authorities and stakeholders participants in the SVP placement process. I’m happy to report that SB 1034 passed without opposition.
Other significant bills approved in the last days include AB 1314, setting up a “Feather Alert” system for missing Native Americans, specifically women and children, similar to the Amber and Silver Alerts we’ve become familiar with. Another bill receiving final legislative approval, SB 846, directs the California Public Utilities Commission to extend the Diablo Canyon Power Plant beyond its scheduled retirement in 2025, making more electricity available for California.
Firearms-related legislation included SB 918 and AB 1227. Despite the recent Supreme Court ruling about concealed carry permits, SB 918 included a long list of locations where firearms would still not be permitted. AB 1227 would have added new excise taxes on the purchase of firearms and ammunition – I joined the majority to vote down both bills.
As a result of strong public opposition, SB 866, allowing minors 15 years and older to consent to being vaccinated without parental approval, was withdrawn from consideration by its author. SB 300, to reduce criminal penalties for major participants in serious felonies like murder or kidnapping, was also withdrawn by its author before a final vote.
This year, just over 2,000 bills were introduced and about 900 made it to the Governor’s desk. He has acted on just over 200 — about 700 remain. As always, he has the final say.

Assemblywoman Marie Waldron

Assemblymember Marie Waldron, R – Valley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.
