Getting Prepared for November 8th Election Day

0

Rachel Beld
Chief Executive Officer
Vista Chamber of Commerce
This November, Vistans will have the opportunity to weigh in on several big changes to leadership for our City and our State Assembly and Senate Districts. Long-time Vista Mayor Judy Ritter will retire at the end of this year after 24 years on the City Council, with twelve of those as Mayor. Two candidates are vying for Mayor – Vista Deputy Mayor John Franklin and Vista Unified Board of Trustees President Cipriano Vargas. This will be the first time since 2002 that the Mayoral race will not include the incumbent.
In the District 4 City Council race, two candidates are competing for the open seat that John Franklin currently holds. Armen Kurdian and Dan O’Donnell both aim to represent the Shadowridge neighborhood. Corrina Contreras will run unopposed for re-election in District 1.
At the State level, recent redistricting means that Vista will no longer be part of the 76th Assembly District which is currently represented by Tasha Boerner Horvath. New lines were drawn placing Vista in the 74th Assembly District with Oceanside, Camp Pendleton, and several Orange County Cities. Assembly Member for the current 73rd District, Laurie Davies will compete with Chris Duncan, currently San Clemente Mayor Pro-Tem, for the 74th District.
In the State Senate, long-time Senator Pat Bates is retiring leaving District 38 open to two new candidates. Current Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear and Orange County Businessman Matt Gunderson are both running for this seat.
At the Federal level, Congressman Mike Levin will face San Juan Capistrano Mayor Bryan Marriott for the 49th Congressional District, which was also amended by the redistricting process, though Vista’s District remains the same.
There are several other important elections impacting Vista including the races for Districts 2 and 3 of Vista Unified School District Board of Trustees as well as Tri-City Medical Center Board Members for Zones 2, 4 and 6. There are also ballot measures and other state-wide races to follow.
If all this seems like too much to follow, don’t worry! The Vista Chamber plans to host candidate forums this fall for several of the races mentioned. Keep an eye our website and social media to be alerted to opportunities to connect with candidates for these races. You can also visit our website and subscribe to our newsletter to be alerted about all our events and activities.
After several years of uncertainty in the world around me, I feel a sense of relief and ownership knowing that I have a vote and a voice in the upcoming elections. It’s important to be informed and vital that we all exercise our right to VOTE.

Serious Injury Collision – Vista Driver, Passenger Injured After Fiery Collision.

0

Two people are in the hospital after a fiery car collision in Vista.

It happened on Sunday, August 28 just after 8:30 p.m. A 23-year-old man driving a Scion was heading eastbound on Vista Village Drive with a 20-year-old female passenger. As the Scion came to the intersection of Main Street and Vista Village, it collided with a Ford Mustang.

As a result of the impact, the Scion ran off the road and crashed into a tree and concrete wall. The Scion’s engine caught fire, trapping both occupants inside the car. An active duty U.S. Marine and U.S. Navy Corpsman witnessed the collision’s aftermath and quickly grabbed fire extinguishers from nearby establishments and put out the flames.

Firefighters with the Vista Fire Department were able to rescue the driver and passenger from the wreckage. The driver was airlifted to the hospital with major but non life-threatening injuries. His passenger was transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of her injuries. The occupants of the Mustang were not injured.

The cause of the collision is under investigation by the Vista Sheriff’s Station’s Traffic Unit. At this time, alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a factor.

Vista Breweries Pave the Way in Innovating Brewing

0

The City of Vista continues to be a place where brewers of all sizes can innovate. From creating a shared brewhouse to experimenting with the new flavors of now and the next decade, Vista breweries are on the cutting edge of brewing.

“Brewing is not a craft that you hone quickly,” said Nick Corona, owner of Five Suits Brewing in Vista. “Even one batch of beer takes months just to finally test a finished product.” Fortunately for Corona, it didn’t take long to become a pro. He got his start in homebrewing in 2012. Four years later in 2016, he won the National Home Brewer of the Year. Three years after that, he and his wife opened the doors of their location in Vista, Five Suits Brewery, named after their family and their history in the casino industry.

After winning hundreds of medals at competitions, Corona put his sights on a new brew with new ingredients. “Up until then, I had never brewed a hazy IPA. Then we came up with our Planet Nectaron,” said Corona. “I came across the nectaron hop, a very new hop out of New Zealand.” The new brew was met with new success.

Five Suits isn’t the only brewery in Vista working with New Zealand hops. Not far down the road is Pure Project that is working together with NZ Hops Ltd. on the Bract Brewing Programme, an effort to select and develop new hop varietals over the next decade.

Booze Brothers Brewing Co. is also looking at new ways to minimize their carbon footprint. “A lot of products that get used in brewing go to landfills or incinerators. There’s a lot of innovation in the San Diego Brewers Guild trying to recycle and reuse more,” said Donny Firth, co-owner of Booze Brothers Brewing Co.

Residential Hot Prowl Burglary Arrest

On August 28th at approximately 10:30PM, North Coastal Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call of multiple subjects attempting to gain entry into an occupied residence in the 2000 block of Wales Drive in Encinitas. The homeowner saw flashlights and heard voices outside.

Deputies quickly arrived, contacted, and detained three suspects inside the garage. Deputies located bolt cutters on the floor next to the garage door and discovered the locking mechanism had been cut. The suspects were identified as 46-year-old Arlington Gill, 47-year-old Trisha Clay and 61-year-old Debi Ditomasso.

During the investigation, Deputies determined one of the suspects forced entry into the garage, entered the residence and opened the front door to allow the other two suspects inside. Due to the quick response by the Deputies, no items were stolen from the residence. All three suspects were arrested without incident and booked into the Vista Detention Facility.

Belly Dancing is One of the Oldest Forms of Dance in the World

0

Belly dancing is one of the oldest forms of dance in the world, and has been practiced for thousands of years. A specific place or time of origination has never been determined, but it has its roots in various ancient cultures of India, the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean regions. Belly dance is a form of exercise that is very healthy for the human body. It promotes strong core muscles, balance and coordination, flexibility, and strong cardio-vascular health. Belly dancing gives you healthy and younger-looking skin. It also helps you sleep better and stick to your body’s natural cycles.

The fluid, dramatic movements trigger the production of endorphins, or happy hormones, which helps you de-stress in time.

It also helps boost your self-confidence. Done regularly, dancing helps prevent obesity. Our class will teach you how to correctly move so you don’t injure your body. Belly dancing has more to it than weight loss. Apart from helping you burn 250 to 300 calories per hour, it also helps with better muscle control and improves memory.
