VISTA — A first-of-its-kind athletic and recreational complex is set to transform the Boys & Girls Club of Vista.
The club was awarded a $3.5 million grant by Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner (D-Encinitas) through the California State Parks to construct a multi-sport complex, according to BGCV Chief Executive Officer Matt Koumaras. The club broke ground in January on three fields and courts, a first for any Boys & Girls Club in North County, totaling 15,000 square feet.
The new fields replace a stagnant area and are expected to become a driving force for the current members, along with a recruiting tool for the club, Koumaras said.
The club serves about 3,000 kids per year, and once the project is completed, Koumaras said they can serve up to 11,000 annually.
