VISTA, CA – Over 100 recently homeless children and their parents will walk into their transitional housing apartments at the Solutions for Change main campus in Vista and into a near magical holiday experience. The 12th annual Breaking and Entering event is the nonprofit’s most sought after volunteer event, with group sign-ups closed a year in advance.
“We couldn’t believe it”, said Lilia Cantero. This was my first Christmas with my son after years of heartache and separation, addiction and homelessness.
“He saw me crying and said ‘it’s okay mommy, this is our home now, and I just balled even more.”
“He asked me who did this, and I told him that they must be angels from God, they left a note and a home filled with love.”
Kelly Van Cleave, VP of Programs said, “Lilia and her son are one of thousands who have experienced this act of giving and kindness from our most ardent and loyal volunteers. Volunteers “break and enter” into a unit equipped with a personal Bio of the family, then deck out the unit with holiday cheer – stocked refrigerators, new handmade quilts, personal notes of encouragement, gifts under a fully personalized and decorated Christmas Tree – it’s one of those times where our North County community connects in a deeply meaningful way with those we serve. We say ‘thank you’, but every year we hear that those who volunteer are so thankful to us for allowing them to connect to our families”, said Van Cleave.
