The City of Carlsbad will hold a second public meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Buena Vista Elementary School to seek input on the revised design for a new park being built near the corner of Buena Vista Way and Highland Drive in northwest Carlsbad.
Members of the community had the opportunity to provide input on the park’s vision and draft designs at a community workshop in June. The city is holding the second public meeting to ensure community members have a chance to participate in this process. A revised design of the park will be presented and discussed at the meeting.
Public Meeting
Thursday, Sept. 20
6 to 7:30 p.m.
Buena Vista Elementary School
1330 Buena Vista Way
Can’t make the meeting? No problem. The revised design will be posted to the city’s website after the meeting. Comments and questions can be sent to Kyle Lancaster, kyle.lancaster@carlsbadca.gov, 760-434-2941.
Background
The 3 acre city-owned property is currently home to a long-abandoned water reservoir and had been previously slated for up to 14 new houses. Neighbors asked the city to consider a park instead. The city was able to make this change in use by incorporating the construction of a park into a set of agreements having to do with lawsuits over the city’s general plan, climate action plan and a proposed development off Poinsettia Lane.
Under the terms of the agreements, the park may include gathering spaces, picnic tables, shade structures, landscaping and a playground. As a “passive use” park, it will not include amenities such as athletic fields, tennis courts, a dog park or a skateboarding park. Restrooms will also not to be part of the park’s design.
Park Timeline & Budget
The park is scheduled for completion in about two and a half years. Lennar Homes will pay approximately $3 million towards the park project.
