The City of Carlsbad officially opened its newest park Friday, a 3-acre spot in northwest Carlsbad with ocean views, a playground, wide grassy hills and more than 30 species of native plants. Buena Vista Reservoir Park was built at the site of a former water reservoir that neighbors long hoped could be repurposed for a neighborhood gathering place.
Located on Buena Vista Way near Highland Drive, the new park was designed through a series of community workshops, where neighbors said honoring the site’s history was a priority. With scenic views of the Pacific Ocean, the park preserves the original water tank as an entry sign and includes a children’s play area, shaded picnic tables, benches and a walking trail loop. Eleven parking spaces along Buena Vista Way were included in the park’s design.
Built in 1918, the Buena Vista Reservoir originally served the surrounding agricultural fields and farming community before storing water pumped via the Mission Basin transmission pipeline in the 1940s from a groundwater well near the former Valley Drive-In theater in Oceanside. The reservoir ceased operations in the 1960s, and the site sat dormant since then.

The reservoir site was previously on a list of city land to be sold, but was turned into a neighborhood park through a set of agreements approved by the Carlsbad City Council in March 2017. The agreements, which stemmed from a lawsuit against the city over its updated General Plan and Climate Action Plan, also ensured the completion of the missing link of Poinsettia Lane, the creation of a new trail and the addition of protected habitat in Carlsbad. Friends of Buena Vista Reservoir, Friends of Aviara, Preserve Calavera, North County Advocates and Lennar Homes of California were all involved in making the park a reality. Lennar Homes built the park, and the city will maintain it.
