Cal State San Marcos Cougar Garcia Earn USTFCCCA Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS – The Cal State San Marcos men’s and women’s track & field teams each earned All-Academic Team honors for their work in the classroom by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) while Clarissa Garcia was named an All-Academic Athlete on Thursday.

The women’s team was one of 149 different women’s programs honored for its academic prowess with a 3.386 cumulative grade-point average while the men’s squad was one of 114 different men’s teams to be recognized with a 3.082 cumulative GPA.

To earn All-Academic Team honors, the cumulative GPA of all student-athletes on the institution’s NCAA Squad List for indoor and/or outdoor track and field must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Garcia was one of 321 women from 93 NCAA Division II institutions to be named an All-Academic Athlete. She solidified her qualification after posting an NCAA Provisional time of 2:14.06 in the 800-meter run at the GVSU Big Meet on Feb. 15 during the indoor track & field season. This is her first USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete honor.

An All-Academic Athlete must meet the following qualifications: •Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of a 3.25 on a 4.0 scale through the end of the semester of competition.
•A least 24 semester hours/36 quarter hours through the end of the semester of competition at the institution.
•Transfer students and/or graduate students are to include grades only grades earned at the current nominating institution.
•The student-athlete must have achieved an automatic-or provisional qualifying mark (individual or relay event) for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
