Cougars Excel Academically in 2018-19

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The student-athletes of Cal State San Marcos put together a successful effort in the classroom for the 2018-19 academic year as the Cougars posted an overall department grade point average of 3.089.

For the spring 2019 semester, the Cougars’ GPA was 3.099 – .019 higher than its fall 2018 GPA.

“Academic achievement is our top priority,” CSUSM Director of Athletics Jennifer Milo said. Our student-athletes continue to achieve new heights academically. I am so proud of their dedication to studies, and I look forward to seeing what they will accomplish next year.”

Earning a perfect 4.0 GPA, CSUSM had 14 Mangrum Award winners for the spring semester and 24 Mangrum Award winners in the fall semester – the highest number of award winners in department history. Of the Cougars’ 236 student-athletes, 36% earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher and 63% earned a 3.0 or higher.

NCAA Division II National Runner-Up women’s golf earned the best team GPA in the department at 3.920 – the highest team GPA in department history.

Several student-athletes earned national academic accolades for 2018-19. Yesenia Betancourt from women’s soccer, Andrew Stalboerger from men’s soccer, Jaime Jacob and Savannah Magallon from women’s golf and Joshua Litwiller from men’s cross country/track& field each earned Google Cloud Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

On the conference side, Magallon and Kylene Shuler from women’s track & field each earned the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Scholar Award in 2018-19. The award honors the student-athletes with the highest cumulative grade point average in each CCAA-sponsored championship.
