CHICO, Calif. – Playing his way to a tie at the top of the individual leaderboard, Cal State San Marcos senior Justin Vrzich has been named CCAA Golfer of the Week for Feb. 12-18.
Hailing from El Cajon, Vrzich put together rounds of 69, 70 and 77 at the Coyote Classic, hosted by Cal State San Bernardino at Canyon Crest Country Club. After Monday’s 36 holes, Vrzich was the only golfer to fire two under-par rounds as he jumped out to a four-stroke advantage after the first day. Tuesday’s 77 allowed Simon Fraser’s Scott Kerr to play to the tie, as both golfers finished at 3-over 216. After five holes of playoff golf where each golfer carded a par, Kerr was able to nab a birdie on the sixth for individual medalist honors.
Vrzich paced the field of 72 golfers in Par 4 scoring, averaging an even-par 4.00 strokes per hole while rolling in 13 birdies over the two-day event. Led by Vrzich’s efforts, Cal State San Marcos finished in third in the team scoring at 36-over 888 (+33) with the Cougars rounding out the top three.
This marks Vrzich’s second weekly honor of the 2019-20 season as he aslo earned the nod once in the fall for the week of Sept. 25-Oct. 1.
The Cougars return to the links March 16-17 for Cal State East Bay’s Tim Tierney Pioneer Classic in Alameda, California.
