SAN MARCOS, Calif. – With a second victory over a nationally-ranked team, the Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball moved up to No. 11 in the Division II Sports Information Directors (D2SIDA) poll while the Cougars made their top-25 debut in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) poll at No. 19.
The Cougars are off to their best start in program history, being just one of eight NCAA Division II teams with a 7-0 record.
On Thanksgiving, the Cougars pulled off an overtime thriller over then-No. 11/11 Minnesota State-Moorhead in the 2019 Malika Sports Tours Oahu Thanksgiving Classic in Hawaii.
CSUSM recorded a historic 69-63 win against then-No. 6/6 UC San Diego in La Jolla on Nov. 21. The win was the Cougars’ first over a ranked opponent in the NCAA era, and it was their first-ever victory against the Tritons.
The Cougars are the national leader in 3-point field-goal defense, holding opponents to just 17.0% from behind the arc. They are the conference leader in defensive rebounds (30.0) while ranking 28th in the nation.
CSUSM returns to The Sports Center on Thursday, Dec. 5 to host Sonoma State at 5:30 p.m.
