Carlsbad Council Tackles ‘active shooters,’ Security for TGIF Concerts

CARLSBAD — More concerts, active shooters, limiting attendance and sponsorships were the hot topics for the city’s wildly popular TGIF Concerts in the Park series.

The good news is the City Council approved three more concerts next year, pushing the total back to nine, which has been the norm for years. The preferred venues, though, are Calavera Hills and Stagecoach community parks with the possibility of Alga Norte Community Park and the series begins in June 2024.

However, more concerning issues were on display during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Carlsbad Police Chief Mickey Williams said the department is concerned with the attendance at the popular events. This year the average attendance was about 5,600 with a record-setting crowd of more than 8,000 at the final concert, he said.
